Stage 1 · From the Big Nickel
Setting Out from the Big Nickel
Gateway measures its casino from the Big Nickel and calls the trip a 14 minute drive. The Big Nickel has no point in this guide's map data, so it gets a route link and no kilometres. The route button opens Google Maps for the road itself.
The Sudbury city point lies 15.8 km south-east of the casino, measured as a straight line. A drive out from the city centre therefore heads north-west. Azilda, the nearest community on the list, sits 4.7 km south-east. Chelmsford follows at 5.1 km south-west. The map above draws the line from any community, and a road always runs longer than its line.

Bonin Road and the Old Track
Gateway Casinos Sudbury stands at 400 Bonin Road, Chelmsford, ON P0M 1L0, inside the City of Greater Sudbury. The building sits on the grounds of the old Sudbury Downs racetrack. Its phone is 705-855-7164, and its own website, sudbury.gatewaycasinos.com, runs in English and in French.
It opened on November 26, 1999, as OLG Slots at Sudbury Downs. Harness racing stopped after October 30, 2013, and has not returned, so the property is no longer a racino. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment took over the daily running in May 2017, as operator of OLG's North gaming bundle.

Stage 3 · Lot and door
The Lot and the Door
Parking on the casino lot costs nothing. At the door, guests must be 19 or older and carry valid photo identification issued by a government. Anyone aged 21 or younger needs one more piece of ID showing their name. Ontario law keeps people under 19 out of casinos, except employees at work. Anyone trespassed from, or self-excluded from, any Ontario gaming property may not enter.
The venue publishes no shuttle, taxi stand, city bus route or valet, and the property has no hotel. Guests with disabilities can ask for a wheelchair, accessible formats or communication supports.
Stage 4 · Two clocks
The Floor Clock and the Table Clock
The slot floor opens at 10 am every day. On nights that begin Sunday through Thursday it closes at 2 am. Nights that begin Friday or Saturday end at 4 am. Both closings fall after midnight, on the next calendar day.
Live tables keep their own clock: 4 pm to midnight Monday through Thursday, noon to 2 am Friday and Saturday. On Sunday they deal from noon to midnight. Champions, the restaurant with light meals, snacks and drinks, has no published hours. Holiday hours are not published either, so the number to call before a holiday trip is 705-855-7164. The crystals tool below shows any hour in Sudbury local time.

Stage 5 · The games
Machines, Cards and Dealers
The slot floor holds more than 400 machines. Six live tables are dealt by real dealers. Blackjack takes three of them. Four Card Poker, Mississippi Stud and Ultimate Texas Hold'em get one table apiece, and those four games make up the whole live list.
No poker room appears on the casino's list. Craps, roulette, keno, baccarat, sports betting and bingo are not on it either. Electronic table games remain unconfirmed, so they are left off here. The search tool below gives an answer for any game typed in by name.

The long way in
Longer Lines from Farther Towns
Visitors from farther out meet longer lines. Espanola lies 60 km south-west in a straight line, while Elliot Lake is 118 km west and Sault Ste. Marie 244 km west. To the east, Sturgeon Falls is 96 km away and North Bay 132 km. Timmins lies 210 km north, and Toronto 355 km south-east.
Every road runs longer than its line, and this guide gives no drive time for these towns. Before setting out from any of them, the floor's closing time is worth knowing. It closes at 2 am on nights that begin Sunday through Thursday and at 4 am on Friday and Saturday nights. The live tables stop dealing earlier every night.

Card and cash
A Card, Cash and a Cap
My Club Rewards is the house loyalty card. Membership costs nothing; Guest Services enrols anyone who shows valid ID, and members then collect points while playing the slot machines. Bank machines and a currency exchange are on site.
Casino games are built so the house comes out ahead over time. A spending cap decided before the drive, with the trip home already planned, keeps the evening in proportion.
Online in Ontario
Online Casinos Under Ontario Rules
Ontario runs a regulated online casino market. Players must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario when they bet. A private site needs registration with the AGCO, the regulator, and an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario, which publishes a directory of approved sites. OLG.ca is the government's own online casino. A site taking bets from people in Ontario without AGCO registration is an illegal operator in the province.
The Ad links on this guide's home page lead to one private online casino business, which pays the guide a commission. It has nothing to do with the casino on Bonin Road. Any site, that partner included, can be checked against the iGaming Ontario directory.
